What is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious disease that has been around for thousands of years. It is caused by a bacterial infection that spreads from a person with active TB in their lungs to another person. When a person with active TB coughs, sneezes, sings or talks, they can spread TB germs through the air.

TB usually affects the lungs, but can also affect other parts of the body like glands, bones, joints, kidneys, the brain and reproductive organs. It is treatable, but needs to be identified and diagnosed first.

What is a Tuberculosis (TB) Skin Test (TST)?

A Tuberculosis (TB) Skin Test, also known as TST or the Mantoux test, is a simple test done over two short appointments by a healthcare practitioner to identify if you have been exposed to TB. Rockdoc’s testing processes are Health Canada approved.

First Appointment (20 minutes)
A healthcare practitioner uses a tiny needle to inject a small amount of the test substance called Tubersol® under the top layer of skin on your forearm.

Second Appointment (10 minutes)
48 to 72 hours after your first appointment a trained health care practitioner will check the test site to determine if you have been exposed to TB. Your official report will be printed and immediately available after your appointment.

If your test results are negative, you have never been exposed. If your test results are positive, our healthcare practitioners will support you to get additional testing.
